Fitness Required
The Queen Charlotte Track is neither easy nor difficult. For walkers and bikers alike a moderate level of fitness and experience is required.
To enjoy your walk you need to be able to carry a medium sized backpack containing your personal belongings weighing 5 – 7kg (10 – 14lbs) for 6 – 8 hours over 15 – 21kms (9 – 13 miles) of track each day.
If you are not a regular walker we suggest you begin a daily walking regime 6-8 weeks before departure. Carry a backpack and gradually increase the distance you walk. Staircase or hill climbing will leave you even better prepared for your challenge.
Thousands of walkers enjoy the Queen Charlotte Track each year without any problems. The average age of walkers is 40+ while many of those who enjoy the track are in their 60s and beyond.
Safety on the Track
Safety is of utmost importance. It is advised that all walkers carry a first aid kit with them along the track.
The track surface varies from smooth well-formed paths to rough terrain broken by rocks and tree roots. There are steep rocky downhill sections and you may have to cross small streams and wade in deep water after heavy rain. We encourage you to walk at your own pace, enjoy the scenery and serenity of the track.
In the event of the weather deteriorating along the track there is the option of an early exit or transfer by boat to the next accommodation point. This must be pre-arranged however and extra costs will be incurred.
